The entrance to Volunteer Park in the heart of Seattle is located just off the Asian Art Museum’s parking lot.
When Friedensreich Hunderwasser, the 20th century Viennese painter and aspiring architect, coined the phrase: “My favorite day is a rainy day!” he must have thought of Seattle.
I have visited Seattle countless time, usually the sun is shining brightly. This time, the end of May, a soft rain is falling, washing the world clean and providing a dust free natural environment. Colors are vivid. Around every corner I discover another vista that demands my attention. Every time I change direction I am momentarily paralyzed and transported into another world. We are in the middle of the bustling city and yet the traffic is diffused, the air is fresh and clean and we tread lightly and with respect. It is quiet on this Tuesday afternoon – Beauty and Peace surround us. I want to hold on and immerse myself in this experience fully.
My camera is engaged and I explore. Words cannot describe the beauty experienced – pictures do a much better job. Enjoy your walk with me!
Shades and tints of lush green vegetation beckon.
The historic water tower rises behind a stand of ancient trees.
The large Gold fish pond is stocked with healthy specimens.
Twisting and turning, agile Gold fish enjoy their spacious environment.
Curious and photogenic – this model is never far from my camera lens!
Moss covered branches testify to the local rain forest climate.
Trees and bushes clustered next to wide open grassy areas – a haven for visitors.
My favorite view: Up, up the tree trunks and branches to the top canopy.
Rhododendrons are still in full bloom at the end of May.
Pale pink Rhododendrons, my favorite soft tint for this year.
Drinking in the color and textures – it’s easy to get lost in the moment.
Nature’s art – an eye catching blemish on an ancient trunk.
The Handkerchief tree is in full bloom – Their spent blossoms, littering the grassy area above the roots, at first sight indeed resemble a lady’s dropped handkerchief.
Oriental Poppies beckon me closer.
The large fragile blossoms, a soft salmon pink on the outside petals, the dark center draws the eye.
One last look inside a perfect Poppy bloom – Spring has arrived.
