A short walk away from the Tacoma Convention Center the Hotel Murano offers a cross between art gallery, museum and comfortable accommodations – not necessarily in that order. When approaching the hotel one’s attention is immediately drawn to the heavy glass doors, and the ladle like steel and plate glass sculpture attached to the otherwise understated building structure.
The Murano Hotel lobby is sleek and modern which provides the perfect backdrop for a vast collection of international glass art treasures. The beauty and luster of glass is integrated everywhere, including the front desk and door pulls. Major focal points are the Venetian chandelier and glorious Viking boats depicting the myths of the Norse Gods.
One can request a special tour of the twenty-one guest floors. Each floor features a contemporary glass artist. Many of the art pieces were specifically commissioned and created for the hotel. An illuminated showcase immediately across from the elevator exit features the complex glass works. The corridors provide further insight into the artists’ practice with the aid of photographs.
The following are a selection of images captured on several floors in the Murano Hotel. I was fortunate to tour these treasures during a brief break from my duties in Tacoma.
I hope you have enjoyed this brief tour. Make sure to visit this unique hotel in the heart of Tacoma during your travels to that region. Looking for great food? The hotel’s restaurant “Bite” has an outstanding menu featuring fresh Pacific North West Cuisine. I can’t wait to come back!
