In December 2015 Miggo announced a Splat-Give-Away. Three lucky Facebook followers from anywhere around the world would be chosen to receive their newest product, a versatile travel tripod. All we had to do was leave a comment why we thought we should be so lucky… I can’t even remember what I wrote, something along the line that I love their product line and that I was looking for a very portable tripod for my travels…
Imagine my surprise when sometime in early January 2016 I received notification that I was one of the three winners. All I needed to do was send my shipping address and look out for the Splat to arrive soon. True to their word, the Miggo Splat was soon in my hands. I was doubly pleased: I don’t win things very often… and I would be one of the first Splat owners in the photography world.
This review has been in the making for a long time… But I have chosen March as my Miggo feature month, so here we go:

The splat arrives flat packed and right away I noticed the near weightlessness of this flexible tripod. The silicone covered flexible metal responds well to bending and maintains its shape, a very important fact when I was going to try this out with my Nikon D610 and a Sigma 24-70mm lens, not the lightest combination.

I love the Splat feet that appear to have texture resembling suction cups for added grip when set up on a flat surface.

The strong connection screw that attaches to the camera like any tripod…

…after I remove the regular tripod shoe. with the trusty Miggo screw driver…

…just like that!

Time for the stability test with camera and lens in place.

The tripod maintained the weight of camera and lens without shifting. I added some pressure with my hand (about another 3 lbs or so) and the tripod did not budge. Instant love!

On to the hanging test in a controlled environment, my office. The tripod stayed firmly attached to the camera and over time maintained the position without shifting.

After all the indoor testing I took the Miggo Splat on its first outdoor excursion. It easily bent around the deck railing and stayed in place securely. I don’t have very strong hands and this was a crucial test for me. Could I easily bend the feet into position and would they respond without too much resistance? I was pleased with the ease of manipulation but most importantly, the Splat maintained the position without any shifting.

Here are the “new friends”, Splat and camera ready for action. Note the hole in the Splat foot, it can be hung on a nail or hook and will not widen or tear. Bonus!

The acid test for me was how the Splat and camera would behave when suspended from a tree. I was nervous at first, but soon felt confident that I could do this hands free 😉 and not worry about the safety of my equipment.

My Splat has become a regular item in my everyday camera bag. It is lightweight and reliable. I feel very confident that it will serve me well in situations where I cannot imagine carrying a full sized tripod to a remote location.
Ready to get or gift a Miggo Splat? Check out the website. The tripod comes in three sizes. I reviewed the largest and most sturdy version for the DSLR. Tripods for the Hero and mirrorless models are also available. Tripods vary in price from $ 19.99 to $ 24.99 (US).
